Genre Specific Evaluation - The One That Got Away

Institutional Information

"The one that got away" is a song by American singer Katy Perry for the album Teenage Dream. The song is a mid-tempo pop ballad about a lost love. It features references to the rock band Radiohead as was as the relationship of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash to express the strength of the relationship. The video was shot at the Lima Residence, a contemporary home located in Calabasas. Mexican actor Diego Luna plays Katy Perry's boyfriend in the video. A teaser trailer for the music video was released and narrated by Stevie Nicks who provides an elderly womans voice speaking about the past and her desire to go back one day which contains scenes of her and her past boyfriend fighting and scenes of them in love. She is later shown as a nostalgic elderly woman dress conservatively and standing by a fence looking into the distance.

Target Audience

The primary target audience for this genre would be aimed at young viewers, from around pre-teen to teenagers as it is a pop ballad with an upbeat twist. The video tackles themes of young love and hints death however there are no promiscuous moments.

Narrative

The opening sequence shows and elderly couple in a large home in a futuristic setting however the tone is melancholy due to the greyscale filter over the shots which suggests a stagnant nature to their lives.(0:22). The elderly woman is Katy Perry in the future however she is nostalgic and has flashbacks of her life with her past love(0:28) The nostalgic shots are tainted with a warm filter to show the warmth of the relationship to the audience. The pair appear to have a simplistic and laid back lifestyle with very different priorities to what the elderly woman has. The shot shows a mattress on the floor, half decorated walls covered in the couples art and the pair are wearing oversized shirts with messy hair suggesting that they are only spending to day together there. (0:45) The over the shoulder shot shows the perspective of the boyfriend seeing his girlfriend stood next to his painting of her suggesting that she is his muse and inspiration. (0:47) Proximity is shown between the pair with a kiss and hands clasped around their faces.

(0:51) The warm safety of the flashback is then heavily contrasted with the current day situation of the elderly woman alone at night time on her bed. The room around her is grey reflecting her depressed mood. (1:10) The dynamics between the couple are equal and there appears to be no struggle for power. They do not follow the stereotypical codes and conventions of a heterosexual relationship shown in this shot as she is the one with her arm around him. (1:21) This shot shows the couple going to a dance where they are surrounded by elderly people however they are dressed like they are going to a 1950's prom. The pair dance with various people in the room before stealing a bottle of wine and a candelabra. They take them back to their home that is only lit by candle light (1:49) where they tattoo each other with matching designs. (1:58) There is a cross cut to the elderly woman with the same tattoo on her wrinkled skin clearly showing that she has kept it as it is sacred to her.

(2:40) This is the first shot where the young couple fight over their art and he leaves their shared home with his guitar and drove away(3:07) The dark colour of the car suggests that something bad may happen and foreshadows what happens later in the video. This then cuts to a clip of the girlfriend in a frenzy crying(3:15) It is unclear whether she is crying about her boyfriend leaving or what happens later in the clip. (4:11) The elderly version of her character visits a sight with scenic views that is revealed where her previous boyfriend died. She visits wearing black to show her remorse and bereavement despite the loss being 50+ years ago.

 Editing

Throughout the music video, the main editing technique is the cross cut editing between he flash back and current day. The use of a warm filter on the past, even when the male characters car falls off the cliff, creates a real nostalgic emotional feeling for the audience unifying the audience with the characters.

Camera Angles

(0:28) This shot establishes the setting and location of where the two characters are living. It shows their occupation and living style which appears to be laid back artists with different priorities to others in society. (1:52) This two person shot shows their loyalty to one another as he is tattooing her freehand signifying her love and trust in him. It is dimly lit with warm candlelight connoting intimacy and romance between the pair despite the pain she may be in. (4:11) This shot is powerful because it shows the elderly version of her character in a warm filter perhaps suggesting that shes finally at peace with what has happened to her past love; however the fence connotes that there is a barrier preventing her to get to him in the next life.

Sound

At the beginning of the music video dialogue is shared between the elderly married couple however it is distant and brief. Then the music begins to play.

Genre Specific Evaluation - I'm Not The Only One

Institutional Information

"i'm not the only one" is a song recorded by English sing er and songwriter Sam Smith from his debut album 'In the lonely hour'(2014). A piano soul ballad anchored by orchestral strings and a gospel structure tackles themes of infidelity in a relationship and was inspired by a marriage of someone Sam Smith knew. The official music video for 'im not the only one' was directed by Luke Monaghan who's also worked with Sam Smith on the video for 'leave your lover'. The music video features actress Dianna Agron as a scorned bride and actor Chris Messina as cause of her heartache.

Target Audience

The primary target audience for this genre would be mainly aimed at an older audience, perhaps above 15 due to the sexual nature of the video. The video tackles themes that are more common for older adults to understand such as infidelity, alcohol consumption etc.

Narrative

The opening sequence for the music video introduces the song title and the singer (0:01) This immediately creates awareness of the song and who sang it and will also create a wider target audience as it will appeal to people who like Sam Smith; almost like a secondary target audience.

The shot zooms in on the house whilst dialogue of a couple is audible for the audience. The first shot after this is a medium shot of a couple in close proximity as they are kissing. Her body language of her hand around his cheeks suggest a happy and close relationship to the audience and a wedding ring can be identified on her ring finger.

(0:32) The over the shoulder shot of the actress waving her husband goodbye is powerful as it is a well lit shot creating a tone of ease and stability and reveals to the audience more about the locations within the music video. Despite the slight blur due to a deep focus on the actress, it is clear that the production team had chosen a quaint suburban area to keep up the 'idealistic' appearance of their marriage. This kind of set up is stereotypical for a happy marriage within media. The actress is wearing white connoting that she is happy, pure and even angelic where as her husband is wearing a dark suit and drives off in a black car causing unease with the audience as black is the antithesis of white, which also suggests his character might be the antithesis of hers.

(0:40) The close up of her face dropping from a smiley house wife to despise suggests that something bad might happen. In the close up her dress isn't visible and therefore the  premise of her being pure and angelic doesn't stand anymore, her makeup is dark suggesting she may have something to hide.
She walks through the house and comes through into her back yard where the filter over the shots have changed from warm to ashy suggesting a double journey through the house, physically and emotionally, and she has now realised that something has changed and it is possibly loveless. (0:55) (1:15)In this shot we see the actress trying to take off her wedding ring however it's too emotionally painful as she has internal conflict of her equal love and hatred for her husband. The shot is of only her hands on the blue carpet denoting feelings of coldness and a loss of love.

1:00) We see the actor in a dark corridor walking towards the camera with elements of green on the windows and walls connoting biter feelings of jealousy and envy.  (1:29) a brunette woman is revealed in this darkly lit building where she meets the actor. (1:32) The dim lighting suggest feelings of unease and instability as they are in a shady location connoting something bad may happen. Furthermore, their proximity is impure as they are in each others arms, giggling. Her costume is stereotypically sexy causing a juxtaposition between his mistress and his wife. The large hooped earrings are often a symbol of sex within the media as well as the dark lipstick. Shots of the pair drinking are in parallel with his wife driving (1:42) (1:39) to show the contrast of the emotional state of the breakdown of their marriage. The scenes containing the wife are well lit suggesting that she is innocent despite the fact she is distraught.

Whereas the husband is laughing and drinking shots with his mistress in the middle of the day. (2:15) The wife is drinking wine from the bottle in a supermarket whilst buying material for arson. Her makeup and hair are in disarray becoming and opposite of the image she was at the beginning of the music video. The ashy filter over the shots of her alone make her look pale and gaunt suggesting that the breakdown of their marriage has had an impact on her physically too. (3:08) we see evidence of the husband's infidelity in a small room lit only by a blue light connoting that their passion is loveless and that he is emotionally cold. The woman is higher than the man in the construction of the shot suggesting that she has more power as she seduced him into being unfaithful to his wife. Furthermore, in the noticeboard behind the pair, the back of a playing card is pinned up, connoting that the husband is playing a game with their feelings.

The shots of the wife in parallel with the affair are well lit by warm fire as she is burning her husbands possessions outside their home. The warm nature of the fire suggests that she has found temporary solidarity despite the burning rage she has for her husbands unfaithfulness. (3:29) (3:46) The shot of her smoking is a complete contrast from the image we had of her at the start of the music video which was a idealistic housewife devout to her husband. (4:32) At the end of the video the husband is walking up the drive where the door to their house is open and she greets him. This shot is powerful because despite the breakdown in their marriage there is still some love left as she smiles when he kisses her neck. In addition, she still has her wedding ring on and it is at eye level with the camera being the main focus of the shot.

Editing

Throughout the music video, the main editing technique is the cross cut editing of the parallel narratives of the married couples day. The harsh chops between the husbands disloyalty and the wife's emotional breakdown connote the nasty nature of the husbands affair. The pace of the editing slows down at significant moments and moves with the characters movement to show reactions to the audience. (3:18) (0:46) (1:41) These shots are all moments when the shots are held to capture all of the moments factors such as mise-en-scene, location, tone and the camera angles.

Camera Angles

During the music video there are multiple over the shoulder shots as they present the characters point of view. (0:31) The shot of the wife waving her husband goodbye appears as thought their everyday life is idealistic and perfect however it hints that under the surface there is something not quite right. By bluring out the scenic views around her it connotes that she has become confused about her feelings for the blurred husband in the car. (1:04) The high angle shot of the actress sat by the pool day drinking connotes that she has a low self-esteem and a lack of power within her life with few motivations to get her through the day. By placing her next to the pool shows a life from the outside looking in it may be envied after however by not showing her reflection in the pool it suggests that she has lost her sense of self and is looking for a new identity other than being a wife.

Mise-en-scene

The mise-en-scene of the music video has several denotations and connotations. Immediately the clothing items establish character roles within the music video. By the wife wearing a white dress with pearls and perfected hair and makeup connotes that she is angelic and innocent whereas the husband wearing black and always being in dim lit locations suggests a shady characterisation and a dark side to their personality. The juxtaposition of the two main locations of the idealistic house and the club really highlights the disloyal nature of his affair as he appears happier in a dark location than the sanctity of his own home.

Sound

At the beginning of of the music video dialogue is shared between the married couple about their dinner at the end of the day. This is also overlapped by sounds of birds tweeting connoting that this is everyday life for the couple. Then the music by Sam Smith starts.

Narrative Mood Board - Planning

This is my narrative mood board as my narrative is slightly unconventional to my genre and therefore I want to show my narrative ideas in more detail.

Choosing an Idea - Planning

After looking at the two initial ideas that I have come up with combined with the audience feedback that I have received while pitching my ideas. I am going to discuss the pro's and con's of each idea to establish which idea would be the best choice for my final idea.

Idea 1 would be a good idea to choose as it is in modern day allowing more choice and creativity for mise-en-scene rather than idea 3 which is more specialist mise-en-scene and setting as well as making it cheap and easy to produce. The ideology and basic storyline of a boy/girl relationship that a lot of people have interest in, intriguing the interest of a wider audience. The idea also allows for a wide variety of camera shots and angles to show my existing knowledge and expand on my knowledge to present in the final product. One of the song choices for the narrative (Held like Kites) allows for a motif that repeats throughout the music video and then edited using the 'cut in' technique. Furthermore, the use of warm/cold filters transforms the shot during the editing process rather than changing mise-en-scene (location, clothes, makeup etc.) all the time to convey the mood of the shot. However in order to create this production I may need several skilled male actors as well as a skilled female for my protagonist. This may take a long casting process with screen tests and rushes etc, it order to get the right look. I also may need to rely on others for transportation to access locations and move my crew to the locations as I don't drive myself.

Idea 2 has a storyline that stands out and highlights parts of society that aren't particularly seen as 'important' or maybe even recognised. By looking at teen homelessness and zooming into the effects within a music video I would be able to bring to light the importance of public sector looking after adolescents within the system and preventing them from living on the streets. Furthermore I can look at the dual narrative and show how different environments and factors effect the two characters and 'Johnny' the drug dealer isn't stereotypically 'hard' or 'tough' and I could show how that effects his life, subverting the common conventions of this topic. The storyline is a clear and easy to follow narrative and fits well with the song. However, most of the locations will be outside which provides a health and safety risk for my cast and crew and even though we would perform health and safety tests as it is an outside environment, it isn't possible to guarantee safety during the course of filming. Moreover I would need a wide range of actors and therefore the casting and filming process may take longer than hoped as we are stuck to a deadline. Lastly, the mise-en-scene to construct the shots to make them seem as realistic as possible may be costly and the production budget is low.

Idea 3 the mise-en-scene of this idea is completely unique and creative, standing out to an audience and creating a USP (unique selling point). There would be a wide variety of camera shots and angles to experiment with. The costumes and make-up allows for a malleable creative control by interpreting 1920's fashion with parts of modern day included. The aesthetic of the music video would be a fresh style as it varies a lot from modern day, however it would be very expensive to produce and construct. In addition, its unlikely that I would be able to find a correct venue in the amount of time available until the deadline and it would be unlikely to find the sheer amount of cast members i would need to produce the music video.

Overall, the best idea to prosper would be idea 1 as it seems the most likely to produce and construct scenes and shots. The storyline is the most likely to attract the attention of a wider target audience and in blanket terms be more successful.

Initial Ideas - Reflection/Evaluation Video

Introducing Main Task - Planning

The OCR specification listed a wide variety for our A2 coursework from the creation of a music video to a newspaper. I have chosen to do a promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video with a magazine advertisement for the digipack and a digipack for the albums release (CD cover). I chose to do this as I feel as though I can expand on my horizons and knowledge do have creative control over a new type of media.

I have decided to expand from the genre and media type I had chosen for my coursework last year. I moved on from the genre type because it wouldn't be appropriate to do again and i want to try new conventions of different genre's. Furthermore, in my coursework last year the mise-en-scene was hard to construct on such a low budget meaning that the costumes weren't as effective as they could have been bringing my grade down. by having a music video set in modern day makes things such as costume, props and hair and makeup easier to construct within a scene.

Moreover, to go alongside the music video I have decided to produce a CD cover and a magazine advertisement for the 'new album'. I have chosen to do this as I have previous experience with the creation of print promotion as I created a promotion package for a film release within my Graphic Design GCSE; achieving an A grade.

Chosen Media and Genre and their Common Conventions

Codes and Conventions of music videos are the different techniques used to construct meaning in them. These types of techniques can be divided into two types; technical and symbolics.

Technical techniques are how meaning is conveyed using technical equipment. For example:

  •  the way camera angles are used
  • different types of shots
  • sound (diegetic and non-diegetic)
  •  the pace and style of editing
  •  the genre.
Symbolic techniques are ways of showing meanings beyond what is denoted. For example:
  • facial expressions
  • gestures
  • poses
  • mise-en-scene
The conventions of a music video vary depending on genre of music. However, the general conventions include:

  • Style
  • Camera
  • Editing Techniques
  • Sound (diegetic and non-diegetic)
  • Mise-en-scene - props, lighting, costume, hair and makeup, location/setting and colours
  • Notions of looking

Performance is when the music video consistes of the artists performing in the video. A good example of this is Beyonce's Love on Top where the video shows the artist continuously performing the song and there is no narrative or any other scenes in the video. This style of music video isn't as common as they aren't as particularly popular as they aren't as engaging for target audiences.

Narrative music videos follow a storyline. There are two types of narrative, Linear and Fragmented. A linear narrative starts a story at the beggining, goes on through the middle and ends at the end. A fragmented narrative is one that doesn't. An example of a linear narrative is Katy Perry 'thinking of you'.

Mixture is a combination of performance and narrative which is very common in music videos as it is more interesting and enjoyable to watch. For example Kelly Clarkson 'since youve been gone'.

Cameo is where a band or artist features in the narrative but does not perform. A good example of this is 'whats my name' by drank and rihanna, where bother artists in this case play a part in the narrative but do not perform.

The camera is a crucial part of producing a music video. It can create an array of different effects through multiple angles and movements. In general, most music videos use a variety of camera shots, angles and movements to create different techniques. Music videos feature a wide range of shots for a variety of reasons, relating to the audience by expressing thoughts and feelings but also to show the viewer whats happening. Shots that are most common in a music videos are:

  • Very wide shot - emphasis is given to the location or setting
  • Wide shot - the artist is taking up the shot but focus is on location or setting
  • Mid shot - shows the artist from waist to head and makes them the subject
  • medium close up - shot is half way between a mid shot and close up showing the artist chest to head
  • close up - shows the artists face or an object in sole focus
  • exteme close up - shows the artist extremely close, for example just the eyes or moth.
  • over the shoulder shot - used specifically in narrative based music videos when the character is acting or speaking to another person or to see what the character is looking at
  • Cut in - this is effective as it shows something that is said in the lyrics it will shows what is mentioned in detail briefly
Camera angles are used in music videos to convey different images. They play a huge part in emphasising the artist or showing emotions and expressions. Examples commonly used in music videos are:

  • Eye-level - shows the subject as we would expect to see them in real life
  • high angle - where the subject is shown from above which has an effect of making them seem less powerful, less significant or submissive.
  • low angle - subject is shown from below giving the impression that they are more powerful or dominant
  • birds eye - this is showing the subject from directly above which can be seen as an unnatural point of view creating a dramatic effect and shows the audience things that the character might not see.
  • dutch angle - where the camera is slanted or tilted to one side so the horizon is on an angle creating a dramatic effect.
It is common for music videos to contain sound parallel. Sound parallel is when the music matches the mood of the video. An example of this would be if the song was slow then the music video would also be slow or if the song was sad then the music video would also be sad.

Mise-en-scene in music videos focuses on:
  • lighting - how the scene is lit/artificial lights/side lights
  • props - performance equipment/band merch
  • costume - outfits
  • hair and makeup - style of the artist/character
  • location - the setting of the music video
  • colour - specific colours used to represent the mood
These elements are important to contributing towards the chosen genre and conveying the importance of the people in the music videos.

Initial Ideas - Idea 3

The idea for this is based off of the Great Gatsby. There is no real narrative besides following a protagonist around a mysterious mans house getting up to mischief and exploring. This allows for interpretation and different shots of the protagonists experiences around the house.

It allows for creativity within locations, mise-en-scene and camera angles by following lines from the novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It also creates interest from the audience as the music and theme of the song juxtapose. There are parts of the song that are brass instruments and others that are digitalised with the beat dropping. This creates a wider target audience, appealing to the older and younger generations.

Initial Ideas - Idea 2

My second idea is to do a music video to Jake Bugg's song 'Messed Up Kids' by having a narrative based on the lyrics. They are malleable and allow for interpretation of teenage lifestyles that may be seen as 'unfortunate' by society. There a several characters mentioned in the song such as 'Johnny' and 'Jenny' which allows for a dual narrative within the music video exploring the lives of the two delinquents.

Johnny is a wannabe drug dealer and is lured into a life of crime by older kids as he had no hope for anything else. His reputation is very important to him as he 'hates a fight' so he needs to keep up the appearance of 'being hard'.

Jenny got kicked out of her home 'in hard times' which allows for interpretation within the music video and give the character more depth that within the lyrics alone. It is also hinted later on that she 'sells her body' which allows for a rich storyline in comparison to Johnny selling drugs showing how the two characters get by.

Initial Ideas - idea 1

Synopsis: Music video - held like kites/please don't say you love me

A girl who idolises a past relationship finds it hard to move on and find someone else. Montage shots in a warm filter will be used to show the protagonists love with her past relationship compared to her current life without him in blue filters. She meets a series of different guys that just don't appear as good as the guy from her past. It will be in settings appropriate to the age of the characters such as around a school environment, town etc.

I intend on diverse representation throughout the music video. The protagonists clothing items will be different when in the two states of warm and cold. In the warm state her clothes will be more girly and feminine where as in the cold state she'll be in darker clothing to reflect her more and state of mind. The guy from the warm state will be stereotypically good looking (tall, dark and handsome) with glasses to also suggest intelligence. The other guys may be equally as good-looking, how ever in the protagonists eyes this is untrue.

These are the two song choices for my music video. The first one is more of a cryptic choice as it allows for more interpretation of the lyrics within the music video as well as mentioning a previous love 'taking something' and the idea of moving on. The second choice is more set in stone had has clear and precise lyrics to work with. It allows the listener/audience to understand the storyline of moving on to meet new people but not fully commit to them by saying 'please don't say you love me'

The song choice is something I will make later on after a series of surveys to my target audience in order to get a more successful choice.

Summer Research Task - Methods of Promotion

conduct research into how media products are brought to market and to the awareness of the audience

Artists are promoted in a number of ways. initially, artists were promoted through the form of top of the pops. Top of the Pops, also known as TOTP, is a British music chart television programme, made by the BBC and originally broadcast weekly between 1 January 1964 and 30 July 2006. It was traditionally shown every Thursday evening on BBC1. Before the era of the internet and social media, this was the only way that artists were recognised. As times changed and social media progressed, artists found new ways of publicising their music. This is particularly highlighted by Taylor Swift in 2014 when she was publicising her long awaited video 'bad blood'.

Swift got her famous pals together to star in her music video which massively helped publicise her video as different fanbases were being appealed to for the same product. Furthermore, all of the famous faces used social media to appeal to their fans as its cheap and effective. By doing so they posted posters of their characters on instagram, twitter, Facebook etc. and counted down the days until the video was to be aired on youtube, another free social media platform.

In the modern day we see far more use of social media to interact with people over things such as Facebook viral videos and adverts, twitter hashtags, instagram likes and adverts on online newspaper articles. This creates a sense of community within the fanbase, unifying them all (especially when a celebrity refers to their fanbase with a special name such as beyonce's fanbase 'beyhive'). In addition, we also see other stars and celebrities doing sponsored instagram posts etc. This is where company's approach stars and pay them to post a picture with their product and write a caption explaining the benefits. Different stars can recieve different payments, some celebs from love island (for example) recieve around £300-500 for a post whereas big stars such as kylie jenner has been rumoured to recieve $450,000 for a sponsored post.
  • are there any innovative examples of promotion you can find?
  • how has technical convergence and the proliferation of hardware changed how films/music products are marketed?
